50 Best Restaurants in the World

Every year, S. Pellegrino’s annual “World’s 50 Best Restaurants” list receives much buzz and much debate (understandably).  Serving as the it guide for the international culinary landscape, the list is compiled each year by an 806-member panel that features some of the world’s most acclaimed chefs, food critics and gourmands.  The 2010 list is out – and published here.

Noma in Copenhagen, Denmark takes this year’s top spot.  Aligned with their advertised menu, the atmosphere is fairly pure and simplistic.  This is going on my must-try list the next time I find myself in Copenhagen!

The United States earns some significant cred, boasting 8 restaurants on this year’s list – more than any other country.  So who makes the list?  Alinea in Chicago, Illinois; Daniel, Per Se, Le Bernardin, Momofuku Ssäm Bar, wd~50 and Eleven Madison Park in New York; and The French Laundry in Yountville, California.

The French Laundry has been on my personal list for years.  What better way to compliment a day of wine tasting?  And it’s no surprise to me that it’s rated so highly – Thomas Keller is the owner and chef.  The building was originally built as a saloon in the 1900s and was then used as a French steam laundry in the 1920s, hence the restaurant’s name.  In 1978, it was renovated into a restaurant by the mayor of Yountville.  In 1994, it came into Keller’s capable hands.

Have you been to any of the restaurants that make this year’s list?  Do you have a favorite restaurant that could compete with these stand-out foodie heavens?

I’ve been to Momofukuk Ssam and Eleven Madison Park (which is, hands down, one of the best meals I’ve EVER had).

French Laundry is on my list, too. Someday!
